10 Essential Duas for Ramadan: Strengthen Your Connection with Allah

Why Duas Are Important in Ramadan
Ramadan is a month of blessings, mercy, and forgiveness. It is the time when the gates of Jannah are open, and our duas are most likely to be accepted. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"There are three whose supplications are not rejected: the fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the supplication of the oppressed."
(Tirmidhi 2526)
Making dua (supplication) during Ramadan helps us draw closer to Allah, seek His forgiveness, and ask for both dunya (this world) and akhirah (the Hereafter). Here are some powerful duas to include in your daily routine this Ramadan.
1. Takbeer – Glorify Allah
Saying Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) reminds us of Allah’s greatness and helps us express our gratitude. It is often recited on Eid, during moments of joy, and when seeking strength.
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallahu, Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd.
Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity but Allah, and all praises are for Him.
2. Dua Before Starting Anything
We should begin every action with Bismillah, as it brings barakah (blessings) and ensures we are mindful of Allah in all we do.
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.
3. Dua for Breaking Fast (Iftar)
The dua for breaking the fast is a beautiful way to express gratitude for the food and drink provided by Allah.
Dhahaba al-zama' wa abtalat il-'urooq wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allah.
Thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged making dua at the time of iftar, as it is a moment of guaranteed acceptance.
4. Dua After Eating
After eating, we should thank Allah for providing us with sustenance and nourishment.
Alhamdulillahil ladzi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana minal muslimin.
All praise is due to Allah, who gave us food and drink and made us Muslims.
5. Istighfar – Seeking Forgiveness from Allah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"I seek Allah’s forgiveness more than seventy times a day."
(Bukhari 6307)
Making istighfar (seeking forgiveness) purifies the heart and brings Allah’s mercy.
Astaghfirullah al-Adheem.
I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Almighty.
6. Dua for Laylatul Qadr – The Night of Power
The most powerful night of Ramadan is Laylatul Qadr, a night better than a thousand months. The Prophet ﷺ taught us this special dua to recite on this blessed night:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allahumma innaka ‘Afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.
O Allah! You are Most Forgiving, You love to forgive, so forgive me.
This is the most important dua for seeking forgiveness and mercy in Ramadan.
7. Dhikr – Remembrance of Allah
The simplest yet most rewarding way to remember Allah throughout Ramadan is through dhikr.
Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The most beloved words to Allah are four: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu Akbar."
(Muslim 2137)
8. Dua for Parents
Islam teaches us to honour and pray for our parents. This beautiful dua asks for Allah’s mercy upon them.
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayanee sagheera.
My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.
9. Dua for Protection from Hellfire
Ramadan is a time to seek protection from Jahannam (Hellfire) and strive for Jannah.
Rabbanaa atinaa fid-dunya hasanah wa fil aakhirati hasanah wa qinaa 'azaaban naar.
Our Lord! Give us the good in this world and the good in the Hereafter and save us from the punishment of the Fire.
(Surah Al-Baqarah 201)
10. Eid Greeting – Taqabbalallahu Minna Wa Minkum
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims greet each other with the Eid dua, asking Allah to accept their efforts.
Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum.
May Allah accept it from you and us.
