A Historic Iftar at Clytha Primary: A Night to Remember

Message from our founder, Kamal Ali
Every now and then, you witness something that reminds you why community matters. Last night was one of those moments.
I had the honour of attending Clytha Primary School’s first-ever Iftar — and what a night it was. No big speeches. No elaborate planning. Just a few families, dedicated teachers, and a shared meal that brought nearly 100 people together in a spirit of unity, love, and Ramadan.
Pulled Together by Heart, Not Hype
The Iftar was organised in just a few short weeks, driven by the passion and care of Ms Dacey and Ms Davis, along with a handful of families from the school. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into something beautiful — a gathering that embraced the whole school community.
The Children Shone Brightest
Ms Davis welcomed us all with a few words about the Clytha family, before Ms Dacey introduced the stars of the evening — the children.
They stood up and spoke with such confidence about Ramadan, what it means to them, and why they love it. It was heartfelt, innocent, and deeply uplifting. As a parent myself, moments like this always strike a chord — this is exactly the kind of environment that helps children grow in faith and confidence.
Decorations, Atmosphere, and a Beautiful Gesture
While families mingled before Maghrib, the atmosphere was warm and festive. The decorations, which I had brought in from the USA (the first of their kind in Newport!), brought so much joy to the space. Seeing them displayed around the school — that sense of pride and celebration — made the effort worth it.
But what really touched us all was a surprise I’ll never forget: Ms Dacey herself had been fasting. She chose to experience Ramadan alongside her students and their families. That act of empathy and solidarity meant so much — a true gesture of connection.
Breaking Fast and a Proud Uncle Moment
As Maghrib approached, my nephew Dilwar stood up to give the Adhan. And let me tell you — as his uncle, I couldn’t have been prouder. His recitation was clear, calm, and full of heart. It was a moment that made the night even more special for me personally.
We prayed together, and while we did, the amazing teachers began serving food — every dish home-cooked and full of flavour. The biryani and daal? Absolutely on point.
Everyone Played Their Part
After the meal, something beautiful happened — everyone got involved in the clean-up. Parents, teachers, and children all worked side-by-side, packing leftovers to share, making sure the school was left spotless. It was a true team effort.
I did my best to offer a thank-you speech (I’ll admit, public speaking still isn’t my strong suit!), but I meant every word.
Gratitude and Duas
A heartfelt thank you to:
-
Ms Dacey and Ms Davis for leading with compassion
-
The staff and volunteers who gave their time so generously
-
The parents who cooked and contributed so much
-
The children who stood up and spoke so beautifully
-
And of course, Bragu Bakes for the delicious cupcakes — 100% recommend!
This wasn’t just an Iftar.
It was a milestone.
It was history made through community spirit.
A simple evening that reminded us of the power of inclusion, togetherness, and shared faith.
May Allah ﷻ bless everyone who made this gathering possible. May it be the first of many.
With gratitude,
Kamal Ali
