Teaching children about the Quran can be a difficult task. How can a small child understand all of its complexity and universal meaning? This is a question that many Muslim parents have asked themselves throughout time - and finding the right time to introduce your child to the Quran can be a challenge.

However, the Quran is something that can be introduced throughout a child’s life. As they grow and thrive, you can find small ways to introduce it, even if they cannot read Arabic, understand all of the Surahs, or commit them to memory. In this post, we’re going to take a look at what age a child should start reading the Quran, and how you can make it a part of their life.

What Age Do Children First Read The Quran?

The first thing to know about this question is that it can depend on the ability level of the child in question. All children learn to engage with literature, religion, and language at different paces. This means that for a child who already knows Arabic as their first language and loves to read, engaging with the Quran may be much easier than for some other children.

With that in mind, a general age that people say is good for children to begin studying the Quran is at 7 years old. This is the age where they will be old enough to sit still for prolonged lessons, understand at least some of the scripture, and begin to ask questions and learn more. However, this is only when we consider actual lessons and study sessions - is there a way to introduce it to them at a younger age?

Incorporating The Quran For Kids Younger Than 7

If you want to give your child the best start they can have at understanding the Quran from a young age, then there are many small ways that you can incorporate it into their life as they grow up. Here are some of the best ways you can do this:
  • Nasheeds: Nasheeds are a fantastic way to introduce children to the Quran. You can find many Nasheeds that introduce children to some of the central concepts of Islam in a fun, engaging way.

  • Duas: There are many simple duas that you can either say to your child, or encourage them to learn from a young age. These can be duas asking for protection, health, upbringing, success, and education.

  • Education Tools: There are also educational tools that you can use to help your child learn the wonders of the Quran at a young age. A good example of this is the Quran Pad, which helps to teach children the basics of the Arabic alphabet, as well as Surahs, Duas, and Nasheeds. With touch-sensitive technology, audio that plays with each key press, and a record function - this is an incredible way to introduce children to the Quran from as young as 18-months.
